Hello Arroyo Parents and Guardians,
This week will turn our attention towards kindness as we participate in the Great Kindness Challenge. To kick off this week at school, we will be sharing a Kindness Checklist for the students to use all week, which will encourage them to engage in kind actions. After your children complete 40 or more acts of kindness throughout the week (January 23-26), they will be honored as Great Kindness Challenge Ambassadors with their name on a special badge that will be displayed on a wall at our school. We will also have planned activities that will focus on ways that the children can spread kindness to others. Those activities are on the calendar that was sent home on Friday.
Here is some information from the organizers of the Great Kindness Challenge to give you a little more context:
“The Great Kindness Challenge is a proactive and positive kindness initiative that improves school climate and increases student engagement. The Great Kindness Challenge is one week devoted to performing as many acts of kindness as possible on campus. Using the provided checklist of 50 kind acts, students accept the challenge and show the world that KINDNESS MATTERS!”
May you all have a week filled with great kindness!
Upcoming Dates to Keep in Mind:
- January 22-26: Great Kindness Challenge Week (this week!)
- January 23: 5th grade Math Placement Informational Meeting (6:30pm in Mustang Hall)

ROPES Presentations are Coming and Judges are Needed
We are looking for parents and community member that would like to serve as a judge for the ROPES (Rite of Passage Experiences). ROPES are challenging projects that 4th, 6th and 8th grade students have completed which allow them to learn about their world and themselves in deeper but fun way.
There are 3 opportunities to judge:
- Monday, February 5th, 6:00PM – 8:30PM (arrive at 5:30PM)
- Tuesday, February 6th, 6:00PM – 8:30PM (arrive at 5:30PM)
- Wednesday, February 7th, 6:00PM – 8:30PM (arrive at 5:30PM)
- We would not be able to maintain this valuable program without the support of our community. We are asking for you to join district staff and other community members by volunteering to serve as a judge on one of our judges panels. Typically we have two to three judges per room and they judge four to six student presentations in an evening.
I hope that you will be able to join us in this worthwhile event. If you are able to judge on any of those times, please contact Christina Carrier either via email at ROPES@scsdk8.org or by phone at 650-590-5935.
Invitation to Participate in the Superintendent Search
The Board of Education is currently in the process of conducting an executive search for a new Superintendent of the San Carlos School District. This is a very important decision and the Trustees are committed to involving the voices of all members of the school community, including parents, teachers, students and district staff. Please plan on attending one of the two Community Meetings scheduled to provide input into the selection process. The Community Meetings will be:
- Monday, January 22, 2018 at 7pm at the District Office, 1200 Industrial Road Unit 9B
- Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at 8:45am at the Heather Elementary School.
There is also an online survey available for members of the community to complete. The survey will be available from January 22 through February 5, 2018 and can be accessed through this link: https://ecrasurvey.com/sancarlossd. Book Drive for ROPES Project
Hi, We are Chase Corso & Noel Blandino, 4th grade students at Arroyo. We are collecting new and gently used books to donate to 10 Books A Home for our ROPES Project. We are looking for books that are for preschoolers ages 2-5. 10 Books A Home is a local non-profit organization that provides in-home tutoring to high poverty preschoolers to help them get ready for kindergarten. There are collection bins out in the Arroyo, White Oaks and Sequoia Preschool offices until January 29, 2018.
We are doing this project because we both love to read and we think kids should be able to learn.
