Hello Arroyo Parents and Guardians,
We are off to a great start with so many exciting learning opportunities taking place for our students. This upcoming week we will begin to take sign ups for some new leadership opportunities that we hope your children will consider. These include being class representatives, green team members, tech support, ballroom helpers, game organizers, school ambassadors to add to some of the already existing opportunities (such as safety patrol, used book fair & talent show organizers…and more!). We will also have another opportunity to also start up new clubs and spruce up/ change existing ones. My hope is that we find and develop something for everyone!
I want to give a shout out to our amazing Arroyo spellers. We hosted our Spelling Bee last week, which was very successful (thank you to Kate Pfaff and her team of volunteers for leading this event). Our students went through all 19 rounds and had to turn to the dictionary for final elimination! We have such great spellers at Arroyo! Our final winners were: Lucia Kitching (1st place), Emma Wang (2nd place), and Brandon Ackerhalt (3rd place). Please congratulate them!
I also want to let you know that we will have an amazing artist, Flo de Bretagne, at our school all next week, painting a mural in the inner courtyard. Please stop by before or after school to see the progress. Right now we have the base coat on the wall, which is making the kids VERY interested in discovering what it will become. Flo will paint a ‘Seeds’ mural for us. You can check out her many ‘Seeds’ painting at her website: https://www.flodebretagne.com/seedstreeoflife. We are grateful for the donation of this beautiful mural and for the exciting and inspirational experience that the real-time painting is providing for our students.
And lastly, our 4th graders who are participating in the ROPES program will be presenting their projects February 5th-7th. Please consider being a judge on one of these evenings. It’s truly an incredible experience to see the 5Cs in action as our students present their amazing projects! Please contact Christina Carrier either via email at ROPES@scsdk8.org or by phone at 650-590-5935 if you are interested in volunteering.
Upcoming Dates to Keep in Mind:
- January 18: SSC meeting
- January 22-26: Great Kindness Challenge Week

ROPES Presentations are Coming and Judges are Needed
We are looking for parents and community member that would like to serve as a judge for the ROPES (Rite of Passage Experiences). ROPES are challenging projects that 4th, 6th and 8th grade students have completed which allow them to learn about their world and themselves in deeper but fun way.
There are 3 opportunities to judge:
- Monday, February 5th, 6:00PM – 8:30PM (arrive at 5:30PM)
- Tuesday, February 6th, 6:00PM – 8:30PM (arrive at 5:30PM)
- Wednesday, February 7th, 6:00PM – 8:30PM (arrive at 5:30PM)
We would not be able to maintain this valuable program without the support of our community. We are asking for you to join district staff and other community members by volunteering to serve as a judge on one of our judges panels. Typically we have two to three judges per room and they judge four to six student presentations in an evening.
I hope that you will be able to join us in this worthwhile event. If you are able to judge on any of those times, please contact Christina Carrier either via email at ROPES@scsdk8.org or by phone at 650-590-5935.

LCAP Parent Advisory Committee – Call for Participants
Annually, our school district develops an improvement plan called the Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP). We are committed to engaging parents as an essential voice in our goal-setting process. This month, we are gathering representatives from each school site to form the 2018 LCAP Parent Advisory Committee. If you are interested in serving as your school site’s representative, please contact your school principal or Interim Assistant Superintendent, Allison Liner. The first meeting of the LCAP Parent Advisory Committee will be held on January 26, 2018. Meetings will include day and evening sessions.

Shoe Drive for My New Red Shoes – R.O.P.E.S Project
Imagine if you couldn’t play your favorite sport because you only had flip-flops. Or if the only shoes you got were hand-me-downs.
Hi! We’re Arroyo 4th graders Kassidy, Pippa, and Maggie. For our R.O.P.E.S. project we are collecting shoes for My New Red Shoes, a charity that gives shoes to children living in poverty in our community. We need your help! Please bring new shoes. There will be bins by the office. Please bring brand new athletic or sneaker shoes, children size 8 to adult size 12. Please do not bring red or blue shoes! Please bring all shoes by Friday January 26! You can also buy shoes off the My New Red Shoes Amazon wish list, so they’re shipped directly there.
Pets In Need Drive – R.O.P.E.S Project
We (Mollie L. and Parker E.) are doing our ROPES project to benefit Pets In Need because there are dogs that need our help! We are collecting new or gently used dog toys and we hope that you can get stuff to donate. You can donate it in the box at the school office with a poster above it. If you want to donate other things you can go to http://www.petsinneed.org/ and check out more stuff they need!
