Hello Arroyo Parents and Guardians,
It’s been great to see all of the students back this week. They all jumped right back into their routines at school without missing a beat!
We have a number of upcoming events and opportunities that will be taking place in the next couple of weeks, many of which are noted in the body of this Newsletter. I would like to share/highlight a couple more with you:
Great Kindness Challenge Week: January 23-27: We will be participating in this national challenge along with CMS, SMART-E and the SC Youth Center. At Arroyo we will have another special ‘spirit week’ with a kindness focus: Monday- 1/23: Peace, Love & Kindness! (Hippie Wear); Tuesday- 1/24: Dream About Kindness! (PJ Day); Wednesday- 1/25: Team Kindness! (Sports Team Day); Thursday- 1/26: School Kindness! (School Spirit Day); Friday- 1/27: Crazy for Kindness! (Crazy Hair/ Crazy Clothes). We will also have a number of kindness activities throughout the week.
Parent Book Club: Raising Happiness: 10 Simple Steps for More Joyful Kids and Happier Parents by Christine Carter, PhD. This book club will be meeting at Arroyo – the last Thursday of each month from 3:15pm-4:00pm (Jan. 26, Feb. 16, Mar. 30, Apr. 27, May 25). Feel free to attend any and all session…you don’t need to have read the chapters to attend! I will be facilitating the Arroyo sessions.
ROPES Project Presentations: 4th graders who are participating in the ROPES program will be presenting their projects February 6th-8th at CMS. Please consider being a judge on one of these evenings. We have more 4th graders participating than ever before, so there is a larger need for judges. It’s truly an incredible experience if you have never judged before! Please contact Christina Carrier either via email at ROPES@scsdk8.org or by phone at 650-590-5935 if you are interested in volunteering.
We are off to a fantastic start in 2017!
Marie Crawford, Arroyo Principal
Welcome back to school! At this time of year we turn our attention to our leadership and volunteer needs for the next school year as some of our PTA leader positions will become vacant. We encourage you to think about how you can contribute to the voice of families and students in our schools. Below are some FAQs, and a description of the PTA President’s role. Could that be you, or someone you know? Feel free to find out more by contacting me, Megan Miller at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We are very grateful for any volunteering help, from a few minutes to a few hours; from organizing a community event to helping out at the Book Fair, we love to see you supporting and engaging in our community. Any volunteering should be about having fun enjoying something you like to do! However, these events and programs only happen when we have volunteers who can lead the PTA and its various committees.
What if I work full time?
Most of our families have households with one or both carers in full time work. Many of our roles only need a few minutes focus time every so often. Some of our leadership roles need more time commitment (1-3 hours per week) but can also fit in around anyone with a flexible working schedule.
How many meetings do I need to attend?
At least one per month, if possible. We hold our Association PTA meeting on the second Wednesday of every month, and all members are welcome to attend. If you decide to join our Executive Board as a PTA leader, we have a meeting once a month usually right after the Association meeting. As PTA President, you will also need to attend the PTA Coordinating Council meeting held on the first Wednesday of every month.
What does a PTA President do?
Oversees and provides guidance for all PTA members/committees and activities, creates agendas and conducts PTA meetings according to Robert’s Rules of Order, leads the school PTA towards specific goals chosen by the membership and is the official representative of the school PTA. The co-Presidents (CMS and Arroyo) work closely with the school administrators to meet the goals of the membership and are responsible for the accuracy of PTA information and compliance with the PTA policies/by-laws. (1-3 hours per week).
Stay tuned for other PTA leader roles and descriptions in the coming weeks!
