Hello Arroyo Parents and Guardians,
I wanted to focus my message this week on Kindness Week. It’s so wonderful that this week also falls in the same week that we focus on family with the San Carlos Week of the Family, and we begin our book club for Raising Happiness: 10 Simple Steps for More Joyful Kids and Happier Parents on Thursday at 3:15. I believe these are all deeply related to each other and contribute to high levels of connection and quality of life for you and your children.
To kick off this week at school, we will be sharing a Kindness Checklist for the students to use all week, which will encourage them to engage in kind actions. We will give out stickers at the end of the week to students who share their checklist with check marks on it (no one needs to complete it, these are just kind ideas that many already do!). We will also have planned activities that will focus on ways that the children can spread kindness to others.
Here is some information from the organizers of the Great Kindness Challenge to give you a little more context:
“At the heart of the Great Kindness Challenge is the simple belief that kindness is strength. We also believe that any action that’s repeated over and over becomes a habit. With the Great Kindness Challenge checklist in hand, students have the opportunity to repeat kind act after kind act after kind act. As kindness becomes a habit, the culture is shifted and peace becomes possible. This is a grassroots movement to make our schools, communities and world a kinder and more compassionate place for all.” – The Great Kindness Challenge, 2017
By way of reminder, here are our fun, completely voluntary, Kindness Week dress up days: Monday- 1/23: Peace, Love & Kindness! (Hippie Wear); Tuesday- 1/24: Dream About Kindness! (PJ Day); Wednesday- 1/25: Team Kindness! (Sports Team Day); Thursday- 1/26: School Kindness! (School Spirit Day); Friday- 1/27: Crazy for Kindness! (Crazy Hair/ Crazy Clothes).
With kindness and respect,
Marie Crawford, Arroyo Principal
