Principal’s Message
Hello Arroyo Parents and Guardians,

I hope that you have all had a lovely holiday break. I enjoyed the snow with my family and had a wonderful time exploring many winter activities including skiing, sledding, snowshoeing, snowman and snow fort building and even an outdoor ropes course! The snow is so much fun to play in, especially with the right clothes. And speaking about weather, it looks like we will be returning to school with a week of heavy rain ahead. Please help your child to be prepared. We will allow the kids to play outside if it is just misting or lightly sprinkling with rain, so that they can get their wiggles out. Please make sure that your child has waterproof outerwear so that they can play if the conditions allow.

I am looking forward to seeing all of the students today. January is always an exciting time to focus deeply on learning and skill building. One area that we will continue to think a lot about are the 5Cs, which include: Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, Creativity and Citizenship/Stewardship. These skills form the foundation for the deeper learning that we want to provide for your child/ren. I invite you to look for evidence and ownership of these skills in the projects, presentations, leadership activities, electives and day to day interactions for your child/ren in the months to come.

I can’t wait to see what we will accomplish in 2017!

Marie Crawford, Arroyo Principal

Crossing Guard Update
Our crossing guards currently serve 7 intersections throughout our district, helping kids cross the street safely. The guards are part of The Crossing Guard Company and they are funded by the City and SCSD. Mindy Hill, SCSD Wellness Director, serves as a liaison between their supervisor and the company. Please contact Mindy at mhill@scsdk8.org if you see a guard is not at the intersection between 7:30-9am, 12:30-1:15pm Wednesdays, and 2:45-3:45pm. Also feel free to let Mindy know what’s working!

Science Fair Workshop #6: Having a Conversation with the Judges and Preparing Your Abstract
The FINAL Science Fair Workshop will be held, Tuesday, January 10 from 7-8:30 pm in the CMS/Arroyo Library.

This is a special review session where other mentors will be looking at your poster content and will be aimed to give you advice on your final poster! Bring any drafts and data that you are planning to include on your poster and be prepared to practice your elevator speech! DO NOT glue down any poster sections onto your boards yet!!

We will also discuss how to register for the science fair, what to expect during your interviews with judges and how to prepare an abstract that will summarize your project.

Helpful information (including workshop presentations) continue to be available on our website at http://www.scsdsciencefair.org/SCSD_Science_Fair/About_SCSD_Science_Fair.html.

Questions: Pam Louie (general info) plouie@scsdk8.org or Jayne Hastedt (mentors/mentoring) jhastedt@scsdk8.org.

PTA Corner
Our next PTA meeting will be Wednesday, February 8 from 7:00-8:15 pm. Hope to see you there!
