Hello Arroyo Families!
We have a number of wonderful learning opportunities for your children, starting next week. These include Art in Action, Project Cornerstone, and Arroyo Garden all lead by parent volunteers. We are so grateful to all of the volunteers who are leading and supporting these efforts. We are also grateful to the many parents and guardians who have been supporting our Makerspace, lunchtime Wild Zone or library supervision, as well as hot lunch logistics. You will notice in this newsletter that there are still some volunteer opportunities available and that it is not too late to sign up for something, so please consider doing so, even if it is just for an hour. Your children still love to see you on campus at this age and we love having you here!
I also want to alert you to some safety concerns and changes we will make in the parking lot.
- We will no longer allow pedestrian traffic (including bikes, scooters & skateboards) to cross in front of the parking lot entrance or exit. Anyone entering from Woodland must enter the school by the Wild Zone. Bike parking is available next to the SMART-E portables. Students will be allowed to exit from that location as well, to avoid crossing in front of the parking lot driveways at the end of the day.
- If you park on the street, please do not walk through the parking lot to drop off at school. We would like to minimize any pedestrian traffic in this area.
- If you drive and drop off, please follow the direction arrows around the parking lot and drop off your child in the yellow hatched area next to the safety patrol kids, so that they can assist you. Please do not take a shortcut and go around the metal barrier…it’s placed there to stop people from doing that so we can ensure everyone’s safety.
- Please remember that we no longer have a crosswalk in the middle of Arroyo street. This was removed by the city for safety reasons. It is exceptionally dangerous to cross there in front of traffic, without a crossing guard.

The Arroyo Garden Needs Your Help!
Our beautiful garden space and garden curriculum are both ready to go. Now we need your help to bring it to life for the kids. The volunteer commitment is one lesson per month– or less if your classroom recruits more than one leader and more than one assistant; you can take turns. No experience necessary, no green thumb required. We will train you and provide loads of support.
Without sufficient parent volunteers, your child’s class might not be able to enjoy this special garden experience each month. Here are the openings that need volunteers:

Arroyo’s First Annual Halloween Party Needs Lots of Volunteers
What do skeletons say before they begin dining? Bone appetite!
On Monday, October 31st, get ready to party down in Mustang Hall. All classes will enjoy an hour of fortune telling, broom races, photo ops, glow in the dark tent, tossing Frankenstein’s brains, prizes and plenty of other not-too-scary and fun games.
To make this a fun party for our 4th and 5th graders we need many volunteers. Most shifts are one hour and fifteen minutes. Please click here to volunteer during your child’s class time and sign up for some ghoulish fun!
The Book Fair will be held between October 31st and November 3rd in the Library. Wednesday, November 2nd will be family night. Please join us to browse the books at the Book Fair with your friends and family. Open to all families and friends in our Central Arroyo community.

Science Fair Workshop #2: How to Research Your Topic and Write a Good Hypothesis
Tuesday, September 27 from 7-8:30 pm, CMS/Arroyo Library
Engineers versus Scientists- What’s the difference? We will discuss differences between engineering and scientific methods and how to apply this to your project.
Time to get researching! We will discuss the art to developing an appropriate hypothesis and tips on how to research your topic and then make computers available to start researching during the workshop. You can bring your own laptops if you prefer!

There are events on two upcoming days to honor and remember our friend and classmate.
October 20: Memorial Plaque Ceremony & Evening Lantern Lighting:
- Memorial Plaque Ceremony: Join us at the Central quad area to see a time-lapse video of last year’s handprint memorial, check out Riley-inspired art, hear the Central orchestra, share stories, decorate a lantern for the Evening Lantern Lighting (see below), and be there when a memorial plaque is placed near the Central Riley Tree. Everyone is welcome.
- Evening Lantern Lighting: Light a lantern in your front yard in honor of the second anniversary of Riley’s death. Pick up paper lanterns and battery-powered candles at the Memorial Plaque Ceremony (see above) *or* from 10/17-10/20 on Riley’s front porch: 1082 Lupin Way.
October 30: The Riley Run
- The Riley Run will be a 5K walk/run community event around San Carlos in memory of our friend and classmate. We will start and end at Brittan Acres Elementary (Tamarack entrance). Everyone is welcome. Proceeds from the $25 registration fee will be split between Camp Taylor and The Children’s Heart Foundation. Register by sending an email with the number of participants and t-shirt sizes to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Join us for a Panel Discussion The San Carlos PTA Coordinating Council and the San Carlos Education Foundation invite you to join us for a panel discussion. We will discuss trends in fundraising, the roles of PTA and SCEF and how other school districts are facing the challenges of school funding.

Register Your Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten Students Now
Do you have a child that will be attending San Carlos Schools for transitional kindergarten or kindergarten for the 2017-2018 school year? Early registration will opens next week and open will continue until March 3rd. To register, please go to the San Carlos School District office at 1200 Industrial Road Unit 9, Monday-Friday between the hours of 8:30 am-11:30 am and 2:30 pm-4:30 pm.
